Shockwave (AKA A.I. Assault)
Dir: Jim Wynorski
2006
*
Jim Wynorski is from the school of Roger Corman but isn't anywhere near as talented. I sort of like what he's doing though. This is a great bit of B-Movie nonsense, it's just that the small budget is no excuse for bad film making. The continuity is horrible, the acting is worse and the script isn't worth the paper it was written on. The CGI is actually quite good and the cast is a list of nerd favorites; Star Trek's George Takei, Robert Picardo and Michael Dorn (something for every Trekkie), Babylon 5's Josh Coxx, Xena: Warrior Princess's Hudson Leick, Baywatch's Alexandra Paul, B-Movie legend Tim Thomerson and Bill Mumy - Will Robinson from the original Lost in Space. Every actor is wasted but their cameos are welcome. The story is actually quite good and I bet the story boards were quite strong too, it's just that the direction is awful. In one hand I think that you shouldn't do something unless you can do it properly but in the other I admire Wynorski for doing it anyway but he was 10 years too late making Exploitation films, 10 years behind with his horror and he makes far too much soft-porn for me to take him seriously. If you have to watch a really bad B-Movie then make it this one but there are a million films you should be watching instead.
