A Wedding
Dir: Robert Altman
1978
****
I've got a love hate relationship with Robert Altman films. There is no denying that he was a master film maker but in my opinion he sometimes just didn't know when to stop - or say cut. The Wedding is a great slice of late 1970's cinema though, with a great ensemble cast including Carol Burnett, Mia Farrow, Paul Dooley, Pam Dawber (in a great debut I thought) and the wonderful Lillian Gish. It just doesn't flow as well as it should but it does have that certain quirkiness about it that lets you forgive any irreverence. It's certainly not his best work but there is something wonderfully cluttered about it and I do feel it's been unfairly overlooked.
