Miami Vice
Dir: Michael Mann
2006
*
The problems with the 2006 film version of the classic 80's TV show Miami Vice are many. It starts off well with quite a dramatic introduction while the audience are still in awe of the beautiful visuals, the digital hand-held effect works brilliantly here but then it all falls apart and becomes irritating as the film continues. The story is complicated and then ridiculous, the script and acting are (unintentionally) hilarious and the characters are so two dimensional I wondered if it should have been a cartoon. The visuals, arguably the best thing about the film, soon get distracting though, with all the real life cop shows around it soon becomes forgettable and you almost wish Mann had just gone 100% camp with the project instead of just making Colin Farrell look like a big girl and then try sell it as something serious. It's odd that a director would choose to destroy their own work like this, usually it's someone else and they have no say in it.
