The Wackiest Ship in the Army
Dir: Richard Murphy
1960
***
Richard Murphy was a talented writer with many great films under his belt. The Wackiest Ship in the Army was is second and last stint as director and is a far cry from his previous, more serious work. This is what makes The Wackiest Ship in the Army stand up against other Navy/War comedies of the era. The direction is beautiful and the War scenes are as realistic and well choreographed as any of the classics. This gives the film its edge and makes the comedy flow just that little bit smoother, broadening the films audience and giving it credibility in more than one genre. Jack Lemmon is great, 1960 was the second year in what I refer to as Lemmon's golden decade of comedy. A handful of actors make the 1960's great for comedies and Lemmon is one of them.
