Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas
Dir: Terry Gilliam
1998
*****
They said Hunter S. Thompson's Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas could never be adapted into film and they were wrong. I can't think of any director other than Terry Gilliam who could have pulled it off, the same applies to Depp in his portrayal as Hunter S. Thompson. Del Toro's performance as Dr. Gonzo however remains one of cinema's greatest surprises and unexpected transformations. The whole film is a joy from beginning to end, unmistakably Gilliam while also being the purest of adaptations. A modern classic, not to mention as funny as hell. Another Box office failure that goes to show that studios, producers and audiences still don't know a good film when it's staring them in the face.
