Brazil
Dir: Terry Gilliam
1985
*****
A beautiful surreal satirical dystopian fantasy nightmare. It's basically Terry Gilliam's version of Orwell's 1984 and every bit as good as that sounds. Brazil is pure black comedy, quality (largely British) satire, mixed with the surreal visuals you'd expect from Gilliam - although he really does excel himself here, each idea and shot being hauntingly beautiful and seeping with sublime madness. It's no surprise that such a rich and diverse list of actors wanted to be involved. Again, not the hit it should have been but is at last rightly regarded as one of the greats.
