The Fisher King
Dir: Terry Gilliam
1991
*****
A surreal yet touching film about redemption - Terry Gilliam style. The story is timeless but the film is an example of the best of the early 90's, a time where I believe film lost its way somewhat. The pairing of Robin Williams and Jeff Bridges is perfect, add the wonderful (and screen stealing) performances by Mercedes Ruehl and Amanda Plummer and you've got maybe one of the best foursomes committed to film. I will add that the late great Michael Jeter's supporting role is one of my all time favorites too. However, it is the ballroom dancing scene filmed in New York's Central Station that is The Fisher Kings crowning moment, it is one of the greatest moments in cinema of all time. An often overlooked masterpiece.
