This Island Earth
Dir: Joseph M. Newman
1955
*****
This Island Earth poses an intriguing and original idea, that's not entirely executed to the full potential but that's half the charm of this and all the other 50's B-movie 'flying saucer' films. The dodgy special effects, un-scary monsters, big-headed Aliens etc, it's all here in all its glory. I do wonder if the studios ever realised that the film is a big comment on the dangers of Nuclear power and questions who is really in power and what their motives really are. In 1955 you had to be pretty careful with your subliminals, so my guess is that this all got overlooked as just another sci-fi adventure. Thank goodness for that.
It's dated pretty badly, one of my favourite lines in this film (and now of all time) is:
Joe Wilson: Here's something my wife could use in the house. An "iterociter incorporating an electron sorter."
Dr. Cal Meacham: Oh, she'd probably gain 20 pounds while it did all the work for her.
Dated but still irresistible.
