Guest House Paradiso
Dir: Adrian Edmondson
1998
**
Made just one year after Rik Mayall nearly died in a quad bike accident, Guest House Paradiso was the project to get him back working and to finally get Richard 'Richie' Richard and Eddie Elizabeth Hitler's 'Bottom' on the big screen. Initially it works well, switching what is essentially 'Bottom - The Movie' to a different setting, avoiding the limitations of the show's situation comedy and bringing it to a new (American) audience but it's just not the same. Rubbish Hotel cliches appear frequently and it really isn't the Bottom that the fans love. It's basically feature length Bottom pretending to be Faulty Towers. It's nothing special, if fact it's a bit rubbish but after watching all of the live shows back to back it came as a breath of light relief to me to be honest. The slap-stick between the two actors is still wonderful to watch though. Well done to Adrian Edmondson for his directional debut though, it does look good.
