Quills
Dir: Philip Kaufman
2000
****
I think Quills works best as a tale of censorship rather than a biography or factual piece on the Marquis de Sade. Now the Marquis de Sade was no Barbara Cartland but I never thought I'd ever feel sympathy for him, this chapter of his live is fascinating and a real eye-opener. I thought it was fantastic, Geoffrey Rush finding the right balance perfectly in his performance. It's an age old moral tale told effectively and passionately, it's entertaining throughout and deserved the applause it received upon its release. I want to see more of the old Geoffrey Rush and less of the Pirates of the Caribbean Geoffrey Rush.
