District 13 (AKA Banlieue 13, B13)
Dir: Pierre Morel
2004
***
District 13 was a welcome modern action film when it came out in 2004 that was without the usual clichés. This is quite a typical Luc Besson production, a wacky mix of action and humour, harnessing in the popular craze of parkour and incorporating political and social issues in Paris (which also so happens to be the home of parkour). This is Pierre Morel's first collaboration with Besson and I have to say it's impressive for a debut although he cut his teeth as a camera operator and is a talented cinematographer. I thought the idea was better than the execution though, the parkour was new and exciting but it took over the film a little too much in my opinion. You can't beat a Luc Besson production though, they're always a welcome change of pace from the usual Hollywood offerings.
