The Remains of the Day
Dir: James Ivory
1993
*****
Merchant Ivory's The Remains of the Day is pretty much a faultless film. The acting is of the highest calibre and the direction is exquisite. It is such an emotionally rich and powerful film, adapting Kazuo Ishiguro's beautiful but simple novel can't have been easy, although it looks effortless, such is the talent that produced it. To show so much emotion in a character who is in fact completely emotionless has to make this Anthony Hopkins finest performance. It's sublime from beginning to end and is up there as one of my all time favourites. If that weren't enough, it's even got Superman in it too, so what's not to love.
