Love in the Afternoon (AKA Chloe in the Afternoon; L' Amour l'Après-Midi)
Dir: Eric Rohmer
1972
***
Eric Rohmer's Six Moral Tales are him at his best, Claire's Knee and Love in the Afternoon being the perfect endings. It's more than I can say for his Comedies and Proverbs though, which on the whole I found pretty disappointing (not to mention unfunny). Love in the Afternoon deals with temptation - and handles it pretty well. The character of Frederic is easy to relate to and I don't think any man can deny either a connection or desire as to his situation, even if only very slight. I thought the ending was brilliant, still open to interpretation and debate but unexpected and satisfying all the same.
