A Cock and Bull Story (AKA Tristram Shandy: A Cock and Bull Story)
Dir: Michael Winterbottom
2005
**
A Cock and Bull Story is very clever. It's brilliantly satirical and multi-layered and it is something quite revolutionary when you think about it considering  Laurence Sterne's novel has been considered impossible to adapt into film for some time. Michael Winterbottom has achieved something that is very hard to do, his heroes Rainer Werner Fassbinder and Werner Herzog have done it and his is just as good as theirs but making a film about making a film very rarely works. I think he's a good director but for every good film he makes, he makes a couple of duds. Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon are great together, they've more than proved that on television and the supporting cast is ace, Dylan Moran being my favorite and one of today's greatest comedians. Unfortunately, it just wasn't very funny. Witty but I was never close to really laughing. First rule of comedy: Make the audience laugh. Second rule: No one likes a smarty-pants.
