The Hoax
Dir: Lasse Hallström
2007
***
The Hoax was a very pleasant surprise. It's a fantastic story, made better by the fact it's a true one. Richard Gere and Alfred Molina work really well together, balancing both the serious and humorous perfectly. It's also quite stylish, Hallstrom gets the feel of the 1970s across well and occasionally exaggerates to great effect. I've not always been a fan of Lasse Hallström. He is a 4-5 star film director but he continues to make 3 star films. I don't understand this mediocre no man's land his work seems to lay, his 1985 drama My Life as a Dog proves he is a great film maker, I just wish he'd start making better films.
