The Hound of the Baskervilles
Dir: Douglas Hickox
1983
***
Douglas Hickox's 1983 adaptation of The Hound of the Baskervilles is very likable which is typical of the British 'made for TV' dramas of the time. It's the sort of thing I grew up on and hold dear. It's not got a huge budget (although it probably wasn't bad for the time) so the performances were everything (although the glowing Hounds are awfully good). Ian Richardson is an overlooked Sherlock Holmes, his performance being as good as any previous actors and Donald Churchill brings the ever important likability factor to Dr. Watson. The supporting cast is fantastic, Denholm Elliott, Brian Blessed and Ronald Lacey are dependable as always and really bring the story to life.
