Without a Clue
Dir: Thom Eberhardt
1988
****
Thom Eberhardt's Without a Clue is a silly but likable spoof of the Sherlock Holmes characters created by Arthur Conan Doyle but it also stays somewhat faithful to the source material and ideas. It's not the first spoof of its kind and I certainly hope it won't be the last but the performances are good and it is quite funny thanks to a great script that never takes things too seriously and never lets the film go too over the top. Michael Caine makes a good Sherlock Holmes but Ben Kingsley pretty much steals the show as a very convincing Dr. Watson. Support comes from an array of talent including the brilliant Jeffrey Jones, Paul Freeman, Nigel Davenport and Peter Cook.
